DeJesus pitches 6 strong in first game of double header
Led by the dominant pitching of Freshman Starter Santos DeJesus (Freehold, NJ), the Green Knights cruised by Central Maine Community College in the opener of today's double header. In only his second outing of his young collegiate career, the lefty DeJesus pitched a solid six innings, allowing only two runs in a 6-2 victory.
The hits came early and often for the Green Knights, as their lead-off hitter, Sophomore Catcher Nick Vorvis (Monroe, CT), began the game with a double that reached all the way to the fence. He scored soon there after to make it a 1-0 game. From there, Vermont Tech used some solid hitting and smart base running, including taking advantage of a few wild pitches from the Mustangs, to take a 3-0 lead after the first inning. DeJesus backed up his team by settling into a rhythm, retiring Central Maine in order in both the second and third innings. Vermont Tech continued adding to their totals in the second, third and fourth innings, scoring one run a piece due to more quality hits and astute base running. Vorvis contributed to the onslaught by scoring off a wild pitch in the second, and by way of an RBI single in the fourth. The only runs for Central Maine came in the fourth on a RBI single and a sac fly.
The Mustangs, however, reaped a certain amount of revenge in the second game. The game was close early, 1-1 after the third inning, but then the ' bats of Central Maine came alive. In the fourth, they scored five runs in the top of the inning, while shutting down the Green Knights in the bottom half to establish a 6-1 lead. Under oppressive heat and humidity conditions, the Knights could simply not mount a comeback, eventually succumbing the the visitor by a score of 8-2. The runs for Vermont Tech came by way of an RBI single in the second by Sophomore Will Dreckmann (Manchester, NH) and a RBI double in the sixth by Sophomore Dan French (Bristol, VT).
Vermont Tech is now 1-3 on the year and in the YSCC, while Central Maine is 1-1 on both the year and in the conference.
