The Bobcats of Paul Smith's College traveled to Randolph Center to take on the Vermont Tech Men's Basketball team on Saturday afternoon. When the teams first squared off on November 17 on Paul Smith's Adirondack campus, the Knights blasted the Bobcasts 84-61. This time around, Paul Smith's gave the Knights everything they could handle.
Vermont Tech jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first three and a half minutes of play. The Bobcats started in a box and one defense in an attempt to slow down Senior Kevin Carr (Westminster, MD). The Knights were ready for it and were able to achieve some early quick scores. The game had all the appearances of another blow out. That was not to be. Paul Smith's clawed its way back into the game, eventually knotting the score at 25-25 with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Patrick Wightman and Kashean Alston paved the way for a three point Paul Smith halftime lead, 35-32. The Knights went cold from the floor in the waning minutes of the first half, managing only four points in the last six minutes.
The two teams traded the lead seven times and knotted the score six times. Kevin Carr's two foul shots put the Knights up for good 60-59 with seven minutes remaining. Vermont Tech stretched the lead to five points with 3:15 remaining when Josh Lindsey hit one of two free throw attempts. Neither team could manage a score for the next three possessions. Freshman Lucas Dutil (Barre, VT) broke the drought with a 15 ft jumper from the elbow with 1:49 left. This opened a seven point lead, 71-64. From this point, foul shots by Vermont Tech's Juniors Jhason Clark (Albany, NY) and Alex Tyrrell (Sydney, Australia) sealed the victory.
Freshman Tevon Erwin (Albany, NY) led the way for the Knights with another double-double, 17 points and 12 rebounds. Carr and Clark each netted 13 points. Junior Josh Lindsey (Palm Bay, FL) finished with 11 points. Kashean Alston had a game high 26 points.
Vermont Tech improved its record to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the YSCC Conference. In the most recent USCAA Division II Coaches Poll, the Knights were ranked #1 among all Division II teams, though that was before their loss to Central Maine.
"I'm happy we were able to pull this one out," said Coach Dyer after the game. "The guys from Paul Smith's never quit. They deserve credit. In our last meeting we were able to get quite a few transition baskets—not this time around. Their defense was much improved. Tevon Erwin had another strong game and it was great to see Jhason Clark going strong to the basket. He is coming off a patella fracture and he is playing in pain. He showed flashes of brilliance tonight in the second half. Jhason is a player."
