Undefeated Lynx Upend Knights
NHTI Defeats Vermont Tech in Men's Soccer, 2-0
RANDOLPH CENTER, VT - In their third Yankee Small College Conference game of the season the men's soccer team of Vermont Tech was shut out by league leading NHTI 2-0.
The beginning of the game had both teams feeling each other and keeping each other in check. A few fouls within the first minutes signaled the contest was going to be tough for both sides, with neither giving way. NHTI came into the game undefeated on the season, winning their first seven games, including going 4-0 in the YSCC, while Vermont Tech was just coming off a Sunday loss to conference for Hampshire College.
Trevor Carignan of NHTI opened the scoring at 10:18 on a rebound after a header by Dylan Bisceglia bounced off the post. That put the Lynx up 1-0, and just three minutes later NHTI was again attacking the net, but Goalie Nate James (Sr./Arlington, VT) was able to fend off their shots to keep the game at just a one goal deficit. The first half came to a close with VTC down 1-0.
The second half opened with NHTI pushing into the zone of the Knights, attempting vigorously to attack and put in what they saw as the goal that would put the game away. Both teams understood the importance of getting the first goal of the second half, as one would extend the lead to two and the other would tie the game. At 53:42 the Lynx hit the crossbar, a shot that looked like it was going in not for a little homefield karma for James and the Knights. At 55:51, however, the homefield advantage could no longer help Vermont Tech as the Lynx' Bisceglia knocked in a goal assisted by a great crossing pass from Colby Easter. The goal was all the insurance NHTI needed, and although the Knights attacked continuously they could not penetrate the defense of the visitors.
Vermont Tech was outshot in the game by a total of 19-11, although each team ended the contest with an equal six shots on goal. Bryan Cole (Jr./Wallingford, VT) lead the Knights on the offensive end, finishing with three shots.
One yellow card was issued on the day, to Olivier Durand (So./Port Au Prince, Haiti).
The men are now 2-3, 1-2 while NHTI continued their undefeated season raising their record to 8-0, 5-0. Vermont Tech next takes on the University of Maine Fort Kent on Saturday, September 22nd at 1:00pm.
