Men's Soccer Keeps It Close, But Bengals Too Strong
Freshman Currier-Cuber Scores First Goal of Career
Randolph Center, VT- The Knights of Vermont Tech put up quite the fight against the undefeated Bengals of University of Maine Fort Kent, but when the final horn sounded the visitors were able to walk away with a 4-1 victory.
The Vermont Tech Men's Soccer team knew they were in for an incredibly tough game, as onto their field walked the USCAA National Runner-Up from 2011. They would, however, not back down and not allow the Bengals to walk away with an easy victory. Fort Kent did go up early, attacking from the onset of the game and scoring at just the 6:37 mark with Christopher Brooks finding the back of the net assisted by Kennard Brown. This was followed not too long after when Brown himself put the ball past goalie Nate James (Sr./Arlington, VT) at 11:21 to put the visiting team up 2-0.
Vermont Tech then weather the rest of the first half, despite the onslaught of shots by the Bengals. There were 25 total shots taken in the first half by Fort Kent with James saving 13 of those that were on goal in the half, 15 total in the game. Considering the Knights only had one shot on goal during the initial 45 minutes, being down 2-0 at the half was at least a victory of morale. In fact, Vermont Tech finished the game with only three shots total, and only two of those on goal.
The Knights came into the second period with a renewed confidence, believing they could get right back into the contest with an early goal. That is exactly what happened, as the Bengals came out flat and Freshman Joaquin Currier-Cuber (Danville, VT) took advantage by breaking away from the defense and firing the ball from about 20 yards out to find the back of the net. This was just the second total shot taken by the Knights, the first on goal and the only shot on goal faced by Bengal goalie Giovanni Sinclair. The goal made the score 2-1 in favor of Fort Kent.
Although the goal energized the home team, the visitors were the ones who quickly seized back momentum of the game. Within one minute of Currier-Cuber's goal, George Coles used the corner kick of Jarry Phillips to put one in the back of the Knight's net and extend the lead again to two. Fort Kent added an insurance goal, at 64:18, to make the final score 4-1.
Fort Kent extended the start of their undefeated season, as they are now 7-0, while the Knights of Vermont Tech fall to 2-4, 1-2. VTC does not have any time to rest, as they play Sunday against YSCC foe Hampshire College at home. Last week, the two teams met in Amherst, MA with the final being 6-2 in favor of Hampshire.
