Randolph, VT: The Vermont State University Randolph men's soccer team returned home on Saturday afternoon but could not slow down a sharp Southern Maine Community College side, dropping a 5–1 result at SHAPE Field.
Southern Maine opened the scoring just over four minutes into the match to take an early 1–0 lead.
The Knights answered in the 19th minute when first-year Caiden Crawford-Stemple found the net with an acrobatic finish to even the score at 1–1, energizing the Randolph bench and the home supporters.
The visitors regained the lead shortly before halftime and carried a 2–1 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Southern Maine struck twice in quick succession to extend the margin, and later added another in the closing stages to secure the 5–1 result.
Randolph managed two total shots in the match, both on target, from Crawford-Stemple and Benjamin Bibimba. Goalkeeper Gabe Sokolnicki faced a steady barrage and recorded three saves while playing the full 90 minutes.
By the numbers, Southern Maine outshot Randolph 12–2 and held a 5–1 edge in corner kicks.
With the result, VTSU Randolph moves to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Knights will look to regroup as they continue their home stretch next week.
