Women's Soccer Shuts Out Saints
Balanced attack spurs season's first victory
On Saturday, September 10th the Vermont Tech Green Knight Women's Soccer team took its first victory of the season with a 7-0 thumping of the College of St. Joseph (VT). Junior Midfielder Kelly Vellex (Burlington, VT) started the barrage in the first half by connecting with the back of the net at 25:33 , one of her two on the day. Vellex was assisted by Junior Ashley Lockerby (Enosburg Falls, VT), who also added a goal of her own at the 10 minute mark in the first half. Their two scores, interspersed with Hallie Shea (Freshman, Lisbon, NH) scoring the first goal of her collegiate career. Shea's goal made the score 3-0 in favor of Vermont Tech. Vellex then capped the first half with another goal, pushing the lead to an insurmountable 4-0 as the game entered halftime.
The Saints simply did not have the bodies or the firepower to compete with VTC. The Green Knights took advantage of their undermanned opponents, who began the game with only seven players, by spreading the field, making it difficult for the Saints to cover everyone. Before the game was over, the Knights scored three more times, including goals by Freshmen Dimequa Rivera (Lebanon, NH) and Rebecca Rossell (Cabot, VT). River was assisted by her sister Pantara, marking collegiate firsts for both athletes.
Vermont Tech is now 1-3, 1-1 YSCC while the College of St. Josephs (VT) falls to 0-3, 0-2 YSCC. St. Joe's next plays at NHTI on September 14 at 4:30pm, while VTC next plays Home on Sunday, September 11 at 1pm vs Paul Smith's College.
