Machias Clips Knights
Women's Soccer drops a mudfest, 5-0
Senior Middie Erin O'Connor had a hand in all 5 goals for the University of Maine at Machias as the Clippers fought through the mud to defeat Vermont Tech by a final of 5-0. O'Connor finished with 3 goals and 2 assists to lead Machias to a victory over VTC on a less than ideal turf. The Lady Knights offense had extreme difficulty getting going, as they completed the game with only one shot on goal. VTC Senior Goalie Abbie Senesac (Williston, VT) was aggressive in stopping 8 of the 14 shots put on goal by the visiting team.
The hard rain of the past few days coupled with a bevy of games played on the field rendered the VTC soccer pitch muddy and slick with a good amount of standing water. Both teams continously slid on the slippery surface, while also dealing with rolling balls that would simply stop when they hit the pools of water on the field. Machias took advantage of the conditions early with O'Connor scoring the first goal at the 40:05 mark in the first half. The Clippers were continously coming on offense, though also garnering 11 off side penalties in the process. The Knights held the Clippers in relative check throughout the first half, allowing only 2 goals but adding none of their own. Machias opened up the scoring early in the second half, netting a shot at 42:57, and eventually tacked on two more to determine the final score.
The Machias women improve their recored to 9-1-1, while the Knights long season continues with a recored of 1-10. The Clippers next play October 4 at the University of Maine Fort Kent, and VTC will next head on the road for a Wednesday, October 5 matchup with Fisher College.
